Quercus lyrata
This tree is a long-lived, deciduous shade tree valued for its adaptability and structural reliability. Exhibits a broad tolerance to soil types, including poorly drained, compacted, or periodically inundated soils. Typically matures with an oval to rounded crown and open branching architecture. Foliage consists of alternate, simple leaves measuring 6–8 inches in length. Leaf coloration is dark green above with paler undersides. Fruit is a rounded acorn, ¾"–1" long, that is mostly enclosed within the acorn cap— a defining characteristic of the species. Develops uniform branching with ascending lower limbs, minimizing the need for corrective pruning. Demonstrates strong transplant success and moderate growth rate. Making it an ideal urban street tree or a shade tree in large landscapes. Can tolerate wet soil.
