The Dunstan Chestnut Tree is a hybrid of American and Asian varieties that are guaranteed resistant to the blight that killed millions of American Chestnuts in the early 20th century.
Leaves are medium to dark green and turn yellow in the fall. Bark is smooth when the tree is young, turns gray and dark with age and is deeply furrowed, twisting around the trunk.
Trees are self-sterile, so two are required for pollination. Ripe pollen has heavy, sweet odor.
Plant 20-50' apart for best production. Fruit is contained in a spiny burr, which opens when it falls on the ground in the fall and releases the fruit, which is a seed, or chestnut.
